AbiWord Weekly News #91, (2002, week 19, released 2002.05.13)

Welcome to issue 91 of the AbiWord Weekly News.

This week development on the next major version of AbiWord really took off. And AbiWord 1.0.1 was officially announced.

I've decided to take out the section with POWs since there has not been made any new ones for a really long time. Hopefully someone will bring them back to life as they attracted new developers while they were being actively maintained, yours truly inclusive.

These are links to snapshot builds of AbiWord for a subset of the supported architectures/operating systems.

Note that the snapshot builds may not work (at all!), but are likely to include more features and have fewer bugs than (older) official releases. Use the official releases for "production systems" and the snapshot builds for testing and when you want to help with Bug triaging.

On the Mailing List

Traffic on the developer mailing list has settled at about 200-400 postings per week.

You may also find interesting threads on the user and documentation lists (unfortunately the archive for the latter is broken at the moment).

This week, interesting topics on the developer list included:

  1. commit HEAD: Pango stuff: People are being active: Tomas has started commiting Pango stuff, ...

  2. Commit: start of GTK2 port: .. Dom started on the GTK2 porting, ...

  3. Commit: Beginnings of Plug-in documentation: .. and David started preparing documentation for all the new plugins. Good to see the documentation keeping track of the development :)

  4. Commit: Bonobo PropertyBag stuff: Dom has also been improving the bonobo support. AbiWord is now an embeddable, printable, persistent, zoomable, configurable GNOME control. Very nice!

  5. IMPORTANT: proposed removal of non-bidi code: Tomas suggested removing the non-BiDi paths of the code. After some explanations in the thread, he went ahead and committed the changes. That means all users will be using the same version of AbiWord in the future, reducing clutter of the source, and avoiding bugs hiding in the least used paths of the old separate builds.

  6. Stable branch maintainer: TBD will be the maintainer of the stable branch. His job will be to make sure bug fixes are applied to the 1.0.x branch and coordinate new releases when appropriate. This will leave the trunk of the "development tree" for major changes.

  7. AbiWord 1.0.1 released: This is the official announcement from Martin. The news also reached slashdot.
