This week in development

Frank releases a new utility, AbiBits, for Mac OS X users who love their ProjectBuilder. Along with that, Christian Neumair has more HIGrrrification™ screenshots to show off, and an official BeOS developer may be waiting in the wings! Win32 users can find out why they should thank Mikey, while POSIX users may want to give a thank you to Stephen Viles. Also within: Open Text Summariser screenshot and more proposed improvements; starving hacker makes up difference out of his pocket for server costs, and a possible POW that could be ZAP'd before it's made official...if you've got the time.

Windows users, your help is doubly requested*. We would like to see more bug reports coming from the Windows crowd, so, if you're feeling more daring, please download and try out the Win32 binaries when they're available. If you want some sweet functionality in AbiWord II: The Wrath of Dom, you will have to participate. You could also consider joining Project Blue Ant.

Attention users with spare change. Marc ended up on the wrong end of a money conversion. He's now 144 euros in debt for our soon to exist alternative server at the University of Twente*.

Speaking of Mark and Words, did you know that, in a thread where a crash was fixed via the power of open source, Gilbert dared to say, in his normally fecicious manner, "I love collaboration, don't you? They should make software where the source is open and developers work together collaboratively, that would be cool. I wonder if such a thing is possible...?" He's a funny li'l pischer, ain't he?

Traffic on the developer mailing list has settled at about 200-400 postings per week. This week, interesting topics on the developer list included:

icon fun : Frank, thinking about the alternative, more universal icon for 2.0 has toyed with a concept or two. His mesmorizing take on the classic SourceGear logo, titled, Swish...128. Ironically, the way Balsa screwed it up for me looked cooler; just don't tell Frank that ;o) You've never seen trademark abuse like this!

Commit(Stable): Win32 build fix : 1.0.6 is now buildable for Win32 users, thanks to Mikey. You'll find this and others on the Latest Releases page.
commit: Methods to extract text form the document. : Martin adds some framework to Abi to extract text from a document. This may be useful for plugins like OTS and Style/Diction/Grammer checker.
unixfonts : James Ogley finds something missing in the tarball for 1.0.6 -- Unix Fonts. Hub picks up and retags after that horrifying incident.
Patch Win32 StatusBar : Ruud Vring, a.k.a. ArVee, has patched the status bar for Win32 users to allow the messages in it to stretch appropriately to the window length.
new abibits module : Frank and PlaidRab(?) have been working on a ProjectBuilder project for Mac OS X to build the needed Cocoa framework necessary for Abi to function. All this work is going towards the secret project, HanAbi. It's like HanSolo, but different. AbiBits builds but doesn't really do anything for right now, but you can find it here. Seth Delackner has been working on a similar project that "isolates all of the code necessary for doing read/write (and imp/exp) with somewhat reduced dependencies on the rest of AbiWord;" which can be nabbed from way over here via a subversion sync-up (people using this already?). Now, as for how those two products are related, well, that's for you to guess at.
New Server (BlueAnt) status : Marc updates on why we don't have our new server yet. See the costs, and then realize that Marc has no food money for the next month!
Fwd: New BeOS diff File! : Rumour has it Dom's made a selection on who's in to keep BeAbi alive. Thus far, we know the name is "Jun."

1.0.6 binaries wanted : Just a reminder to developers. Win32 users, take note: The bidi version will only be built if sufficient interest justifies it; plugins installer not uploaded to sourceforge because the nederlander was only half there, apparently.
[RFC] Proposed AbiWord preferences dialog mockup , Re: [Usability] [RFC] Proposed AbiWord preferences dialog mockup and Re: Proposed AbiWord preferences dialog mockup : Christian Neumair wants to know how the preferences dialogue should look. A holy war on usability, gui functionality and lord knows what didn't break out...much, but several good points, thoughts and suggestions made it to the list. See this bug for related discussion. Mock up of various preferences included User Interface, Document, Spelling and Other.
Commit: disable gtk+ deprecated stuff : Ever want to ZAP a POW before it was official? Here's your chance. Locate the remainder of the gtk+ deprecated and gdk deprecated calls, and you can make Dom happy. As he put it, "Most are just dialogs that need some Glade2-lovin+GtkTreeView." How can you ignore a request that has the word "lovin" in it?

Weekly Prize Patch

Dom, with the help of all those of you who donated to help keep AbiWord great, re-established the Weekly Prize Patch. Established at $45 pre-charges (read: the financial companies cut), the prize is awarded by the decision of Martin and Dom, both of whom must agree on the winner. Though neither Dom nor Martin may vote for themselves, they posses two "trumps" that allow them to vote for the other, therefore nullifying that other's vote. Most importantly, winning is entirely dependent on how lagered-up Martin and Dom are at the time in question.

POWs

This section is to be changed to integrate with the rest of the AbiSource POW pages. New version to be ready with 2.0...or next week, depending on how much work-work I get done. I just corrected Statics tables, so, this still stands. Scroll, scroll, scroll...

The concept of a "Project Of the Week" is to single out tasks of major interest that outside developers might be interested in providing assistance to. Until a "best way" of listing POWs come to mind, they shall be listed in a short description. Any user interested is welcome to assist in tackling these POWs. If you know someone who's interested, you can link directly to a POW, in order, they're pow5 (at the top) through pow1 (at the bottom). Reminder to developers, I can't post them if you don't submit them. Additionally, feel free to announce if one of these is finished (in case you don't mention it on the list or in the cvs). Oh, and in case you didn't notice, they're a great way to get money from Dom, really!

After the hyperbolizing this POW, interest has been dwindling, and there really is a lot left to get done. Personally, I think it's the holidays; however, you can't go by me, because I was going to add ASCII breasts to get more attention. As a prototype you might be able to hack something using the AbiCmd plugin to wrap the style and diction tools. The AikSaurus (Thesaurus) plugin should also be a helpful guide.
When you get the basics working you could try to get Abiword to display green squiggle underlines to mark errors, or otherwise work on a good user interface.

Description: Tackle some or more of the various bugs that cause issues in attempting to print under Windows

Comments: "The problem is that printing on Windows is broken with several brand of printer drivers (see dependent bugs). It appears that with standard PostScript driver it does not happen. It appears also that version 0.9.6 had less problems than 1.0.1 so we might find out where the regression is bu diffing.

This week's activity: ResoUnconf +13 (14 : 1), VeriNew -2 (8 : 10), ClosAssi +1 (1 : 0),

Resolved to Unconfirmed was quite high this week; however, it was a weak market for the Verified to New index. Changes of Closed to Assigned remained in the positive, though very nominal. Like the VeriNew before it, investors are being warned to be wary of the growing ResoUnconf market. Alan Bluespan noted that though the continued adulation of Resolutions is founded, the market will become more equally distributed in the near future. Louis Bugkyser, notable development analyst, reported that several advisors have already suggested that the cycle of Closed to Assigned will begin again; if true, this will be the first major return of the aging market in nearly a year.

Stephen Viles was cool enough to take care of 428, Hitting return at the beginning of a paragraph changes.... Out of nowhere, 5198, Justification doesn't work, has risen to notable heights. All that being the result of massive revoting after a few bugs (including Stephen's 428) have been demolished.

Approximately once a month, don't hedge bets, I'll get this updated by asking (read: whining at) dom. In the meantime, whenever you want to see how much is in and where it gets diverted, just peek down here.
