Finally I downloaded kword to try the table support it has.

What the developers promise looks very nice to me (maybe because it is
very close to my "minipage" proposal :) but the handling with tables
(=framesets) seems a little counterintuitive to me, e.g. yo have to
click/switch between text and frame editing mode.

After only a few editing actions the rendering goes nuts, the cells do
not more appear where they should and the helper-grids partially
disappear. The ps-renderer however still works, wo I suppose the
internal xml-representation too. When closing and reopening the file
the table still do not appear at its place, but at the top of the
page.

So it seems to me, that there is still no decent (in terms of machine
resources) free Wordprocessor available which can do decent tables
(despite LyX, but...). AbiWord take the challenge?!

Best Regards,

P.S.: Happy Xmas
