If you do:

make ABI_OPT_DEBUG=1

you will see all the debugging messages displayed. Simply put in you own

UT_DEBUGMSG((" I'm at line 559, val = %d ",val));

whereever you need it. You debugging message will appear in the xterm that
you start abiword from.

I hope this helps. I'm new to abiword too.
