Usability is important. This should be obvious.
That said, everyone, and I do mean everyone, should read the following

Jakob Nielsen answers usability questions

everything he says on his webpage, http://www.useit.com
For good measure, read http://www.iarchitect.com and http://www.asktog.com
Repeat.
Seriously though, usability is _very_ important, and lots of people who
know a lot have posted it all on the web. When thinking about AbiWord,
take advantage of what they have done.
