I had problems with make crashing using Cygwin B20.1 also. I am using MSVC++
5.0 on Windows 98. I solved my problem by updating Cygwin with the bugfix
titled "Win95 make/fork/fault bugfix" dated Jan 15 1999. It's listed on the
Cygwin home page under News, but I just checked the link and it seems to
broken. I found the file cygwin-inst-19990115.tar.gz at
ftp://sourceware.cygnus.com/pub/cygwin/old/snapshot-19990115/

Good luck,
