I'm not sure this is relevant, but just in case, I thought I'd bring up
how I was planning to abuse runs for the purpose of advanced field
support.

I intend to create two invisible runs (such as FieldStart nad FieldEnd)
which will surround a group of runs contained within the given field.

Furthermore, all fields will need a new attribute specifying which (if
any) field they are a part.

If this conflicts with any new work on runs or the cursor, please let me
know.
