Subject: make clean runs out of memory

I did "make clean" and soon got this thrashing noise punctuated by long silence
that means the computer has run out of memory. (Normally this happens when I'm
web surfing and the X server accumulates tons of fonts in memory. I can avoid
it by killing and restarting kfm.) How can deleting a file run out of memory, I
wondered. I rebooted and made clean again. It went into many 190 levels of
nested recursive makes! Why??
