None of both. autoconf build does not work on my Solaris box because
I haven't installed autoconf and automake yet.

Nope.
But the problem I'm having on Solaris is that it apparently does not
use this libiconv linked statically. Only the plugin replacement
used with LD_PRELOAD trickery.
