I hear you here, Thomas. Bonobo (the Gnome embedding system) also has a
Streams API that I'll probably have to support someday too. Linux does have
support for stuff like QNX's "whatever filesystem" too, though (httpfs,
smbfs, etc...). Where it doesn't, it wouldn't be too hard to add. The
problem is that Gnome runs on Solaris, Linux, BSD, and even Win32 now, so
your following suggestion (though totally valid) is unfortunately
unfeasable.
