As I say, I *have* libpng, expat & iconv installed, but not as peers and
not in default system locations.

This *should* work - and, indeed, I can solve half the problem by defining
CC="-I/Users/fjf/fjf/include -L/Users/fjf/fjf/lib"
on the configure line. Failure now occurs because c++ can't find expat -
well, okay, *that* was predictable.
