I agree that tables are an important feature in a word processor.

However, one of my long-term frustrations has been the poor implementation
of tables found in most word processors today.

Just my $0.02 worth, but I think a table implementation should be allowed to
be viewed as tables work in, say, M$ word *or* (and here's the nifty bit) as
a mini-spreadsheet. I mean, having tables is nice, but not being able
automatically re-compute values in them is incredibly frustrating and
short-sighted.

Now, I'm not saying it must have the *entire* feature set of Excel in it,
but I think it could be a bit more useful than a simple multi-column,
multi-row layout feature.

It apparently is a matter of controvercy if we are to (try to) get tables
working or not for 1.0.

Many are the voices claiming "we can't release 1.0 without tables". Many of
those voices don't know diddley about programming tables I'd suspect
(please, don't be offended if you do).

So what do we do? Should we perhaps create a small group of developers
looking into the problems with tables and let them say "Can do" or "Can't
do"?

I know that Tables aren't scheduled for 1.0, but with this response (not to
mention news-sites that over 6 months ago mentioned "Well, AW is cool, but
it doesn't do tables") perhaps an AbiWord Tables Working Group (AWTWG is
longer than a TLA, and just as unpronouncable :-) ).

I don't suggest we do this, I just suggest we take this posibility into the
1.0 equation.
