What, select (thus copying) and paste?
Then you most certainly haven't been using any sort of unix.

This is standard behaviour in almost all (if not all) X servers.

It is extremely userfriendly, and it is also one of the things I hate
the most not having it in other platforms.

Maybe you didn't understand the behaviour.

1 open an xterm, type some text. select that text.
2 click the middle button of the mouse, there you go, pasted text.
3--inf click the middle button of the mouse again, there you go, pasted
text.

This works in almost any X aplication.

But abiword... only does steps 1 and 2, and I have found out why.
It absurdly clears the clipboard.
