As I understand it, the clipboard and the selection in X are two different
things. Merely selecting some text puts it in the selection, but putting it
in the clipboard requires some further action (hitting the Copy or Cut
buttons). Hitting the middle button pastes the selection; hitting the Paste
button pastes the clipboard, even if something else has been selected.

Are there any Xperts who can confirm or deny this?
