I put the default value behind a #ifdef DEBUG statement

This means that the old behavior will be used in 0.9.3 (0.9.4 will use the new
behavior by default). This also means that anyone can change the behavior by
editing their preference file.

0.9.4 will have the new behavior and the stuff in the preference dialog to
change the behavior. also we will have some time to polish the feature more.
