Just my 2 cents - I was able to get the tarballs and nightly builds to build
fine on Mandrake 8.0, but I had to do the following:
* remove the iconv peer directly altogether (thanks to Francis for pointing
this out)
* rebuild the zlib libraries with '--shared' option
