there is basic Open Office Writer importer (== .sxw) in CVS

as far as i can remember, dom wrote it, it does text import and maybe a
little but not much more than that. It gets built as a plugin as the
zipios library adds a bit of extra bulk that is not currently used by any
    other part of abiword.

I dont think anyone plans to work on using the stuff you just mentioned,
    but plans change.

    Patches welcome :)

    Stuff Caolan mentioned

If you implement a filter for .sxw i.e. >= 6.0 then that gives you an
infrastructure which would make it possible to consider piggybacking new
StarOffice filters over that format to allow abiword to use newly
    developed SO filters. e.g.

    http://xml.openoffice.org/xfilter.html
    http://xml.openoffice.org/filter/
