We don't necessarily have to maintain them equally.
We do what we need to the part we need when we can.
Much like with the ispell/pspell code. Some people
may prefer to work on one than the other. At various
points one may be the semi-official working one and
it may be leapfrogged as we encounter specific
problems. As for resources this is such a key
component that I think most of the key developers are
going to have to learn something about either Pango or
FreeType. It certainly won't be possible to do
properly with just one guy like the bidi build.
Well maybe possible but maybe not a great idea.

Somebody stated in this discussion that it only gave
us back a sequence of glyph indexes and didn't do
the bitmap - that the bitmap was left to FreeType...
