Actually, I suspect that the usual result will be that the user never knows
what character is in the document, gets confused by AbiWord's buggy smart
quote behaviour, and eventually gives up in disgust.
Most users will not know what Abi is doing, because they will just use the
program, not read the documentation. Saving something other than what is
displayed on screen (at least in English -- it may be different for Arabic
and Hebrew) strikes me as a really bad idea.
