Note that the actual docs in STABLE and HEAD are now well and truly
branched. Make sure that you make changes to the right set, and ship the
right set.

This commit backports some stuff that hadn't made it to STABLE.

Updated Changelog to 12/6/02.
Backported som information files from HEAD.
