This fixes one bug or two. The next bug is harder to narrow down, even
though I think I know exactly what's happening - an extra expose_event
is getting sent to the window and we aren't redrawing. With my latest
changes, you can clearly see that it shows something like "Arial" on the
popup before it goes gray. Why it's getting painted gray is beyond me,
at least for now.
