Apparently, at least on Raphael's machine, Glib2's
'g_locale_to_utf8' and 'g_utf8_to_locale' fail if the
current locale is UTF8.

While I can't reproduce this in my UTF8 locale, I've
just committed some code that should be fault-tolerant
in this regard.
