Hello -

Some time ago I struggled with your layout engine because it didn't draw
paragraphs right in justified mode and it stretched text lines over the
margins. I now found out that this was all related to my Xft2
installation. It seems that I installed Xft2 without the new Xrender
extension from freedesktop.org so that it compiled with the original
XFree86 version. I installed the newest version of Xft2 with all its
dependencies and abiword does well now (!).

If somebody else has problems with your layout engine, ask him to
re-install Xft2 :)
