abiword 1.99.6 dies: All font failbacks failed

      I have compiled abiword 1.99.6 from source code, but it dies when I attempt
    to start it:

    /tmp> abiword --version
    1.99.6
    /tmp> abiword

     I learned from
    http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/abiword-dev/2003/Aug/0086.html that
    abiword knows nothing about fonts paths and relies on FontConfig. I have
    fontconfig-2.2.90, and my file /etc/fonts/fonts.conf seems to be sane.

    Lines 21-25 out of 304:
    ...

            <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>
            <dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
            <dir>~/.fonts</dir>
    ...

    These directories exist and, except the last one, have a lot of fonts.
    What should I do?
