It should be possible. The folks at SkyOS ported GTK+
AbiWord to it. Basically, you'll want:

1) To make sure that FontConfig is installed
2) To steal their font and graphics classes

That way, you'll draw to the screen using FreeType
instead of Xft2. Other than that, things should be
AOK. In fact, you may wish to just steal their AbiWord
tree and start making modifications to it.
