You may want to review the theory behind darcs
(http://abridgegame.org/darcs/), which is a version control system
developed by a physicist. The developer developed a theory of commuting
patches, reordering patches, dependencies, the stuff.
If you consider editing instances to be like repositories, then you can
make use of darcs' algorithms to overcome network-lag related problems.
