We will drop the .strings alltogether. The ONLY way to translate
is by
using .po files. The mailing list archives contain tons of
reasons,
which I'm not going to reiterate. In the future, the .strings
files will
be removed from CVS altogether.

You can work with a .po file just fine from the console. I
translated
nl_NL completely using a remove console and vi.
