FYI, 'make distcheck' is now supported, a side-effect of making 'make
dist' work.
Newer automake does not unconditionally wipe out Makefile when working
in "GNUmakefile mode", as we do. I'm not exactly sure what version of
automake fixed that, it certainly works with 1.9.6.
