The run-time effort of analyzing the document will be small compared
to the disk latency of seeking back to the beginning of the file and
then inserting text into the file while preserving the existing
contents. This is even worse with networked filesystems (like GVFS and
Gnome-VFS).

You'd also need to add enhancements to the library AbiWord uses to
save all of its data (libgsf) for this to work. This is a lot of
developer-effort for not (if any) much gain.
