Thank you, that make sense. I was able to run AbiWord in this manner.

Is there a way to set CONTENTSDIR to something else than
/AbiWord.app/Contents when you run ./configure? Something like
/Applications/AbiWord.app/Contents would make sense.

By the way, MacPorts does build an X-free GTK stack. You just have to
specify the correct variants. I have written a little documentation on
