I would like to emphasize that this is *not* (exactly) the patch I sent in
and that I have tested extensively!

I don't get why parts of it (for example comments and my name in it) have
been dropped and why it is mixed with some other patch that still had
unresolved issues (strcmpi only one of them) which result in a mess now (see
r29621).
