mathtype is the current and beefed up version of the program that is known
to the rest of the world as equation editor in msoffice. While I believe that 
the mathtype format specified here is a later version than that of equation 
edit, it may well aid someone interested in attempting to convert the 
equations as found in microsoft word to something useful, say mathmm or 
whatever.
