As I understand it, given a specific "aff" file that an existing dict was built with, AbiWord must tell ispell what type of "altstringtype" should be used. This is probably "latin1" for west europe languages.

When I use a "svenska.hash" that is native "latin1" in the hash file AbiWord has no problem with accented characters. So the problem is not in Abi, it's just missing translation to and from ispell if the dictionary default is TeX or some other 7-bit encodeing.

One way would be to compile specific Abi dictionaries, in ISO-Latin1, but that would be "A BAD thing". (Not on Win32 since there are not ispell in the OS).

I will be looking into some way to tell ispell routines what "altstringtype" to use. To make it sure to work, this string (default "latin1") could be read from "system.profile".
