Question about builds

My particular version of BSD does not support
the "install -d" usage. The "mkdir -p" command
is preferred. I submitted diffs for this, but they
don't seem to have made it into the latest generation
of Makefiles. Is this a problem with the way I
did the submission, or a compatibility issue?
