Aah, looks like you need abidistfiles. That's something that completely
slipped my mind when I wrote the install target--that people using
tarballs have to have a package of those files.
If you're using CVS, just do "cvs co abidistfiles" at the same level
as you did "cvs co abi" and the 'make install' should work.
I'll go update the web page to make this a bit more visible, and
we'll need to get a tarball of the distfiles for people building
from source tarball.
