commit -- tree cleanups and more warnings (yeah!)

I've altered the platform makefiles for those platforms where
GCC is the compiler used to include some pretty length warning
flags ("-Wall -W -ansi -pedantic -g" for debug, substitute "-O2"
for "-g" for release). I also went through and tried to fix all
the new warnings this change caused, so I touched a lot of files.
