like to take this opportunity to whine about how much easier i/e could be.

Those of you who are up on your XML will recognize XSLT, the eXtensible
Stylesheet Language - Transformation spec. This allows to you define
rules for transforming XML from one vocabulary to another. If we were
able to use this as our exporter, we could, in principle, just have a
stylesheet for every new format, and be done with it (or close). These
stylesheets would be short, and easy to create (I could do almost all of
them by myself.) Sadly, the XSLT spec is missing one component that
prevents us from doing this.
