Up front, let me say I am not a programmer. I am a
professional writer with five novels published under my
own name, and three ghost written. I've also had
almost fifty short stories and an equal number of
articles see print.

These are my only credentials for input. But as a
professional writer I want to get away from Word, and
AbiWord appears to have great promise.

First, 10 point type is useless for a writer. Times
New Roman is also useless, except for a few websites.
While some like Ariel, the industry standard is Courier
New 12 pt. Dark Courier 12 pt. is even better, and
I'd love to find a word processor defaulted to it.

I also need the capability to "Save As" everything
possible for the many markets I use and other systems I
send to.

To replace Word, I need not only word count, but also
character count, including space count, because as a
professional writer I don't count words, I count space.
Too hard to explain quickly, but anyone interested can
look at the format articles on the SFWA website.

Cut/Copy Paste must work flawlessly with many other
programs.

Drag and drop is also important. CWordpad is the best
I've seen at this. I haven't yet found a file type
other than .pdf that it won't open, including Yeah,
Write files that will crash Word every time.

And to make me get rid of Word, something I'd dearly
love to do, I have to have a grammar check program.

I know this is asking quite a lot, but it's what I need
as a professional writer, and with these features I'd
drop Word and grab AbiWord without hesitation. So, I
think, would many of my fellow writers who are
dissatisfied with Word.

Hope this wasn't too silly or intrusive.

James A. Ritchie
