I should have been more detailed... your prompt reply, Joaquin, led me to notice that the way I wrote about it could lead to believe it as gnome related.
It IS NOT... make'ing without gnome support has the same result.

I am running locally... to run remotely, i'd need to install the fonts first...
currently (and just *to*make*things*sure*by*excessive*config <:)) I have both xfs configured and also xseting the fp in my .xinitrc.

like this:
## from xfs:
## more /etc/X11/fs/config

catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
[...]
         /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,
        /usr/local/AbiSuite/fonts

## from .xinitrc:
xset fp+ /usr/local/AbiSuite/fonts

yet it still happens.

duh? this did not use to happen.. I have built about more than a dozen successful builds previously... and since I seem to be the first noticing this stuff, it's probably not even related to the source in it selft, but to some weird configuration. problem is... I *really* can't get it... it seems fine.
