Talk to Luke Jordan. He has already started work on numbered lists.

Numbered lists are important, so much so Luke is trying to get it done now,
before 1.0. Any type of auto numbered heading feature would rely heavily
on this code. We would really appreciate your help. Ask Luke how it is
going, and what type of help he could use. Luke has done a terrific job in
the past of checking in rock solid features that are implemented cleanly,
with all of the loose ends tied up. This particular feature will have a
lot of loose ends.
