I had not thought of doing it this way. I was going to make a table of
toggle buttons with the symbol on each button. When a symbol is pressed it
appears in the midle of the dialog between "insert" and "finish" buttons.

After selecting a symbol press "insert" and in it goes at the current
insertion point. If you leave it on screen pressing "insert" again puts
the previously selected symbol in the text.

At the top of the dialog would be the font selection dialog to choose the
font to be inserted.

My solution would be very platform specific though.

I really appreciate the non-modal "Insert Symbol" dialogs in other WP's
I've used. It is nice to have the "Insert Symbol" up on a different part
of the screen ready to be used to insert a "pi" or "gamma". In my opinion
Abi would be significantly worse with a modal "Insert Symbol".
