   This patch applies and compiles fine for me, but I'm wary to commit it
because the handling of wacky characters in wv is not my area of expertise.
If other people have problems applying the patch but don't see anything
wrong with the content of the patch itself I'll be happy to commit it. (The
patch looks harmless, but I've learned not to trust appearances.)
