Subject: commit -- On UNIX, display checkboxes next to checkable menu items

Display checkboxes beside checkable menu items on UNIX at all times. It
was distracting and confusing when the boxes only showed when their menu
items were moused over. If the old behavior was done on purpose (which I
doubt), please let me know and I will be happy to back this fix out.
