In my opinion, you guys should try to go to version 1.0 of Abiword before
arguing about what language to use.
Who are the users of abiword? Mostly secretaries of programmers?
If secretaries, than some kind of simple language, like basic. If
programmers, than something like java or another C++ derived language.
After all, you all are C++ programmers here, aren't you?
