Subject: patch for bug #795. Who can take it?

As many of you seen, I have been applying some relatively harmless patches
of late, but that isn't really my thing.
While trolling through bugzilla, drk@sgi.com not only reported some IRIX
build problems, but also a patch to the makefiles as well as some of the
code itself. I need somebody much more skilled than I to take a look at
the patch he added in bugzilla, and apply whatever needs to be applied.
