The Basics Continued...After having studied some of the basic but vital commands of AbiWord, let us now move on to some other basic commands:* Undo The undo commandDuring the editing and formatting of a document, you can sometimes make errors or do something that you want to undo. The command "Undo" is very useful for this. There are three ways to undo an error:
The redo commandTo restore (or cancel) the effects of the "Undo " command seen above, there are three ways to do so:
The cut commandThe "Cut " command is very useful to move a text or an image. This command must be combined with the "Paste" command seen below. To cut a word, a paragraph or aany other object (an image for example), you should select/highlight the object, then:This will erase the object, but do not of panic: your object will be put into the memory of the computer (in the buffer/clipboard) and all that remains to be done is to paste it somewhere. The copy commandThe " Copy " command is very useful if you need to duplicate text or an image. This command must be combined with the " Paste " command seen below. To copy a word, a paragraph or any other object (an image for example), you should select/highlight the object, then:Your object, unlike the "cut" command, will not disappear: but your object will be put into the memory of the computer (in the buffer/clipboard) and all that remains to be done is to paste it somewhere. The paste commandOnce that your object is in the computers memory (by using either one of the "Cut" or "Copy" commands seen above), you just have to paste the object into the desired place. To do so, position your cursor where you want to stick your object then:This command is active only if your buffer/clipboard were filled using the "cut" or "copy" commands. The pasted object will be the last object either copied or cut. |

Installing AbiWord on FreeBSD / INTELWelcome to the community of AbiWord users! The current version of AbiWord (0.7.9) should install and run properly one FreeBSD 3.2 systems with a INTEL (or INTEL-COMPATIBLE) processor. AbiWord has been packaged in several different distribution formats to simplify the installation on your system: A much more detailed version of these instructions is contained in the README .TGZThe TGZ installation process is very simple.
pkg_add AbiSuite-0.7.9.tgz TARThere are two versions of the Tar files: one is a statically-linked version and the other is the dynamically-linked version. The dynamic version is smaller (2.7Mb vs 3.3Mb), our goal is to make use of a number of shared libraries on your system. If you are running FreeBSD 3.2 or newer, the dynamic package should work for you. If you can't run the dynamic package, try the static package. The installation process for the static Tar files looks scary, but is actually quite simple.
gunzip - C abisuite-0.7.9-FreeBSD_i386_static.tar.gz | tar xvf -... or, if your tar command supports the ' z' flag: tar xvzf abisuite-0.7.9-FreeBSD_i386_static.tar.gzBoth these commands will create the directory abisuite-0.7.9-FreeBSD_i386_static . /install.sh |

Description of AbiWordAbiWord is a small and simple word processor, that is fast and complete. It forms part of the AbiSource project which is sponsored by the SourceGear company. The goal of this project is the development of an Open Source and multi platform office suite . The beginning of this project starts with AbiWord, the word processor. Abiword's features include it's " look & feel " (see the screen capture), it's working pages and paragraphs(not sure about the translation here), a spell checker, an interactive rule, the integration of styles, it's unlimited capacity to undo / redo , a Rechercher / Remplacer(???) function and the insertion of images. It is also able to import documents from Microsoft Word 97 and rtf (Rich Text Format) and to save documents using Internet HTML format. But the most significant difference of AbiWord compared to almost all the other word processors available is the format of it's native files. A document saved under AbiWord has an extension by default of * abw and is written in XML and thus in ASCII format. These files can then be read by any text editor. That does not mean that AbiWord is a XML editor. AbiWord is a word processor which uses the XML like a practical syntax for representation of documents. It is total new compared to the other traditional word processors and that ensures that when a document is written with AbiWord, it is tied to no particular word processor; word processors which will become obsolete in the five years to come. Lastly, AbiWord is completely free and multi platform: it functions under Windows and the majority of the Unix systems. The next few years will see personal data processing become very much a part of the development and the deployment of several operating systems (OS). AbiWord will be thus able to be put into these principal OS. (Not sure about the translation here either) Once again, the choice of native files XML will ensure portability of these files onto these various platforms whereas the traditional word processings platforms will remain restricted to only one or several platforms.

The development part of the Open Source concept differs from traditional commercial software owing to the fact that the source code (lines of instructions which defines the software in itself) are freely available just as the software is itself. For the majority of the users, it is of little importance, however, everyone profits from the ceaseless improvements that each volunteer makes on the original software. Everyone can take part in the improvement of the product. This concept is opposed to that of the proprietry software developer, who is protected by a licence prohibiting the access to the source code, any additions or withdrawals to the source code, the copying of the software and it's redistribution. For more information on the Open concept Source, visit the site www.opensource.org | |
AbiWord is thus Open Source software
. It is not a shareware: you do not have any legal obligation, moral or
of all other kind. It is completely free. We simply want anyone to be able
to freely use this software: you can even copy it for other people who
are likely to be interested.
AbiWord is being born from a model of development that many people ignore. The result of the contributions of many people all over the world is that frequent updates appear. The users of AbiWord should always check to see if a new version has come out, and should also consult the AbiSource site frequently to be sure that they are using the most recent version of AbiWord. |
