Well, let me share a recent anecdote. Here at the University of Chicago,
we have something called the Scavenger Hunt (if people here read the NY
Times, we were in it last year, since someone in my dorm built a breeder
reactor - complete with produced plutonium). This year, one of the items
was to convert a word document with lots of formatting to tex. I cleverly
got AbiWord to do my work for me (thanks, joaquin). However, the idea was
to preserve the word formatting. This is the sort of thing that I see the
AbiWord LaTeX export being used for - taking a document in a word
processor format and putting it into latex, for some purpose that requires
latex. I think in most of these situations, margin preservation would be
desired. I would be surprised if people used AbiWord as a real LaTeX
editor. But then, I wrote my whole math paper in LaTeX via Emacs. :-)

So, my vote is to preserve abiword format.
