I am just learning XML myself, and I found some very useful Web pages at
http://www.w3schools.com. I would recommend these to anybody who wants
a good introduction to XML and related topics.
The following is quoted from their web page at
http://www.w3schools.com/schema/schema_intro.asp . It is rather vague,
but I expect to understand quite a bit more after I work my way through
their web schema school (although I might have to go through their DTD
school also before I understand the differences between DTDs and
schemas).
PS: Don't let "school" scare you -- each school seems to consist of
from 5 to 20 concise and nicely done Web pages. If you are using IE 5
or higher (which I am), the examples can be viewed "dynamically".

"XML Schemas are the successors of DTDs
XML Schema was originally proposed by Microsoft, but is now a W3C
proposal. We think that very soon XML Schemas will be used in Web
applications as a replacement for DTDs. Here are the reasons why:
XML Schemas are easier to learn than DTD
XML Schemas are extensible to future additions
XML Schemas are richer and more useful than DTDs
XML Schemas are written in XML
XML Schemas support data types
XML Schemas support namespaces

XML Schema is a W3C Working Draft
Note that XML Schema is still a W3C Working Draft. A Working Draft is
always subject to changes, and the specification will not be stable
before it becomes a W3C Recommendation.
However - according to the W3C Working Group - substantial changes to
the specification are not anticipated, and the XML Schema specification
is expected to reach a Proposed Recommendation status this year.
