I believe that I made this change in a (failed) attempt to fix a bug
reported in bugzilla (the exact bug number eludes me right now) where the
abiword splash screen shows up on all of the viewports (evolution shares
this bug). Personally, I like the new behavior, but others are free to
disagree of course. --nosplash is always an option too.

I would be more choosy about what you call "brain damages." These two points
are wholly unrelated and extremely different in both nature and severity.
