Now that Martin has checked in our 25th (!!) localization of AbiWord, I
figured this would be a good time to review how far we've come on this.

Being a competitive sort of person, I wanted to see how we stack up, by
analyzing the following URLs:

  http://i18n.kde.org/teams/
  http://i18n.kde.org/stats/gui/i18n-status-table.html

  http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/teams.html
  http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gtp/status/status.shtml

  http://www.mozilla.org/projects/l10n/mlp_status.html

  http://fmg-www.cs.ucla.edu/geoff/ispell-dictionaries.html

  http://www.abisource.com/dev/strings/strings.html

  http://www.sun.com/software/white-papers/wp-so52/#multilingual

  http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/FAQs/Multilang.asp#MUIques3
  ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developr/msdn/newup/glossary

Since the translation status of various projects tends to fluctuate greatly
-- some are always up-to-date, some are really lagging, and others don't
exist yet -- I went ahead and categorized translations as follows:

KDE
---
1 - KOffice current
2 - KOffice (< 50%)
3 - KDE current (UTF8, no KOffice)
4 - KDE dated (no UTF8, no KOffice)
9 - just people, no product

GNOME
-----
1 - current Nautilus & Ammonite
2 - some Nautilus
3 - dated
9 - just people, no product

Mozilla
-------
1 - current (M18, 0.6, 0.7, or 0.8)
2 - dated (M14 - M17)
3 - old
9 - just people, no product

AbiWord
-------
1 - current
2 - dated (< 50%)

StarOffice
----------
1 - exists

MSFT
-----
1 - Windows 2000 Advanced Server
2 - Windows 2000 Server
3 - Windows 2000 Professional
4 - glossary only

To better focus future discussion, I've broken out the resulting comparison
tables into three separate messages, as follows:

  - locales with ispell dictionaries
  - CJK locales
  - other locales (without dictionaries)

Enjoy!

Paul
